Esch2022 MUSIC WORKSHOP

The Future Frequencies initiative emerged from a desire to not just celebrate the existing culture of the Luxembourgish region Esch2022, but to nurture its new generation.
Under the executive creative direction of Co-CEO Brendan Shelper, the battleROYAL Berlin team joined forces with established European electronic music producers Frank Wiedemann and Matthew Herbert as musical directors, Imogen Knight as movement director and Gabriela Flores as show director, in their shared passion and desire to embolden the region’s artistic voices of tomorrow —whether in songwriting, composing, mixing, performing or producing. As part of the Esch2022 REMIX Festival, the workshop brought together an eclectic patchwork of styles, personalities, backgrounds, ages, and influences – honoring not just the region’s cultural plurality, but the excitement of its kaleidoscopic musical identity. The participants were selected via a regional public call, with the workshop culminating in this concert, as the result of several dedicated months of work put in by the participants — none of whom are, yet, professional musicians. This final concert is also a co-creation process completed alongside countless students from the Conservatoire de Musique d’Esch-sur-Alzette, the local Melodic Vibrations Choir, and the Ensemble à Plectre d'Esch-sur-Alzette. Attempting, between all of them, to answer one question: What does the musical future of the Esch2022 region sound like? What you will see tonight is the result of that process. Confidently cross-hopping genres, remixing generations and styles, we have never seen a concert quite like it. Furthermore, in the act of making the show, we have hopefully demonstrated the answer to our question: the future of music in the region, like so many of the solutions to today’s problems, lies firmly in collaboration. We thank the participating artists for their hard work, patience and dedication, and we warmly invite you to join us on this explorative journey tonight. We'd like to thank everyone who has taken part in this project for being so generous with their time. Welcome to Future Frequencies.

HOW CAN I APPLY?

We are looking for diverse musical
talents, composers, songwriters,
producers and more!

The workshop addresses emerging as well as established composers, music producers, performers, and songwriters. We seek raw talent from all backgrounds of the cultural rich region of Esch. We are specifically looking for people who are open to move beyond their own musical boundaries.

If you are open to moving beyond your own musical boundaries and co-create with other talents, you are the kind of person we are looking for!

Esch2022

European Capital of Culture in 2022

Esch-Alzette holds the title of the European Capital of Culture 2022,
together with ten other Luxembourgish municipalities and eight French municipalities.

Esch2022 sets the region on a mission for a better post-industrial society
by remixing the future. Opportunities like the Future Frequencies Workshop
are part of a major campaign of co-creation that will lead to the official
launch in February 2022.
